How You Can Prepare Your Home for a Window Replacement

January 1, 2014 By adminSHI

You’ve invested a lot of time and effort into the process so far in order to firstly sort through the dozens of types of replacement windows available and choose one, before secondly contacting and interviewing several window replacement contractors capable of installing your new windows. You’re probably feeling quite exhausted, but you’re very close to being home and dry, there’s just the matter of preparing your home for when the contractor arrives so everything can be done as efficiently and as trouble-free as possible. We work with the communities of Toronto, Markham, Richmond Hill and Durham, and over the years many people have asked us whether there’s anything they can do before we arrive to fit their window replacement. There is and we’re going to outline a few of those things during this article.

What You Can Do Before We Arrive to Fit Your Window Replacement

While the actual installation process is something that should only ever be carried out by a trained professional, there are a number of simple tasks that you can perform to allow them to do their job as quickly (and as efficiently) as possible, lowering the overall cost of the project. These tasks include:

  • Take Down Curtains and Blinds – This step has to be done before your old windows can be removed and the new ones installed. Doing it before the contractor arrives can save a considerable amount of time and ensure that your window treatments can be stored away safely out of harm’s way. Make sure you take note of how these items fit together, as some systems can be quite complex. If you’re not confident of completing this task yourself, it may be wise to contact a professional in order to avoid accidental damage.
  • Have Security Sensors Removed – Modern home security systems often include sensors for the windows so that the alarm goes off if the glass is broken, alerting you to the presence of an intruder. If you have such a system fitted in your home, these sensors will need to be removed, although how easy this is will depend entirely upon the system that you have installed. If you are unable to complete this task yourself, you may need to get in contact with the company that installed the system.
  • Prepare the Surrounding Area – A window replacement can be a messy job, with plenty of dust and debris produced as a result. To avoid lasting damage to the interior furnishings in your home and a lengthy clean-up process after the window replacement has been completed, put down some drop sheets and cover over furniture and electronics before the contractor arrives at your property. Move items to other rooms where possible, as dust can become airborne, which is why it’s also important to seal off the room while the work is being completed.

If you’re in need of a window replacement, whether you have vinyl windows or any other type of windows, Superior Home Improvements are the company to contact.
