Reasons to Change

One of the most common questions we receive, “Do I need to change my windows?” Chances are if you’re asking that question you already have a pretty good inkling of what the answer is! Who can I ask for advice on replacing windows? A reputable window replacement company should give you honest advice on whether replacing windows in your home is a good idea. Many times we advise customers that it isn’t necessary to change certain windows in their home. Home inspectors or a certified technician performing an energy audit test of your home. A handyman or quite often a painter will often advise a home owner that it’s no longer advisable to maintain old windows and doors.

Obvious reasons to change windows/doors Air or water leakage. Leaks are often hard to track and in the case of water can originate elsewhere (i.e. the roof, siding or brick) but the water enters the home through the first opening in the building envelope, typically above the window or door. This leads to damp, rot and mold. Damaged or worn out hardware can make it difficult, if not impossible, to open or close windows. Often replacement hardware cannot be located as the manufacturer is no longer in business. Exterior frames won’t hold paint or are rotted. Water has made its way into the wood and when covered with fresh paint it becomes trapped, the paint will then bubble and crack , usually within a few months. Energy costs! This is a big reason many people change their windows or doors. Even if not leaky or drafty, a considerable amount of money can flow out of poorly insulated window glass, or doors, in winter. Don’t forget summer heat either! Air conditioning costs are substantial and old single pane windows, or double paned with metal spacers allow far too much heat into a home. Cosmetic/Convenience. Many people simply want their largest investment to look good and desire products that they can finally maintain and clean with very little fuss and effort. Investment. You will always get more bang for your buck selling a properly maintained, attractive home! LoE coatings can protect furniture, drapes and hardwood floors from damaging ultraviolet rays. New windows can provide wonderful ventilation cutting down on AC costs. Older windows are often seized or never opened in the first place.

Sometimes it may not be necessary to change windows/doors. Finding the source of a leak early on before rot, although not always easy, if properly remedied may result in not having to change the window/door. If you have thermal windows (2 panes of glass sealed with air or gas in-between) often the manufacturer’s name is printed on the spacer bar between the 2 panes of glass . You may be in luck and may be able to track them down for replacement parts. If not there, try looking on the hardware. Sometimes a fresh coat of paint may do the trick if you just want a little sprucing up but trying to paint all the windows in a home can be a labour intensive and expensive exercise. Condensation on the glass. This is an interesting one which we receive many calls about every year. Condensation MAY be caused by inferior or improperly installed windows BUT please gain an understanding of the atmosphere in your home and eliminate some of the conditions that cause condensation, before considering replacing your windows. You may save yourself some money not to mention maintaining a healthier living environment. If you’ve just purchased a home or are in the process of acquiring one or maybe just for future reference, most warranties are transferrable to subsequent owners nowadays and you may be in luck and items can be repaired no charge! In almost every case warranties must be transferred within a short time period after acquiring the home, usually one month! You’ve just won lotto and need desperately to spend money!!
