Every stage is important during a renovation project and not many people realize the amount of work that goes on between placing the order and the actual installation. Some of the steps below only occur during a brick to brick installation. Once everything is finalized, written orders are placed with our suppliers. Our suppliers will confirm receipt of the order then send us their version of what we ordered (the proof copy). These will be checked against the original measure sheets for accuracy, and any discrepancies are clarified and adjusted before the order goes into production. I’ve placed my order now you just make them right? Turning an order into the office is a crucial step. Most errors occur when information is being exchanged. The most effective tool in eliminating errors is good communication through the use of detailed forms, that have been designed to communicate all the information of an order. Detailed measure sheets are handed in along with the signed order. They are read through by Jeff and verified that the information matches that found on the order. Jeff prepares 2 packages. The first is a master file for our database, the second is a recheck/installation package for Art.

The Recheck appointment Before Art embarks on a recheck appointment he will read through the installation package, and if anything isn’t clear he’ll discuss it with Jeff, or the sales rep for clarification. At this point Art will make sure he has all of the necessary tools, Bay window angle kit, long ladders etc, to measure the job properly. Detailed measurements and observations are crucial to doing a superior job and this is where we excel. There aren’t many companies where the owner takes responsibility for this stage.(Art taking the time to see if we can install a larger window) Art will often discuss the job in more detail with the customer, using this opportunity to make certain the job goes smoothly and there are no surprises. He will look at the overall job site for things such as parking, access, alarm systems, what type of ladders, are scaffolds required, etc. When measuring brick to brick, Art will determine which brickmold will be used on the exterior, in order to maximize the glass area without compromising the installation. We also determine the depth of the wood jamb extension to be used in order to correctly position the window over the stud wall . Even interior wood trims (casing trim ) must be measured in order for us to install the correct size trim once the new window is in. At this time we also check for style problems that may not have been noticed when the order was placed, such as Casements hitting against the soffit when opened, sliders may not be able to be tilted in because of an interior valance or low ceiling in the basement, etc. Taking proper angle measurements of existing Bay windows, allows us in many cases to replace the Bay brick to brick, with an exterior vinyl brickmold . This is a skill that most window companies have not mastered.

After Recheck and During Manufacturing Upon returning to the office Art turns in his completed measure sheets to Jeff where all of Art’s measurements and observations are discussed. These can include anything from a recommended change in window style, to possible colour changes or additional labour needed. At this point anything major that deviates from the original agreement would be discussed and agreed to, usually in writing or by e-mail with the customer before starting the manufacturing process. During production our suppliers pay great attention to detail and use sophisticated manufacturing processes that ensure consistent quality. Our window supplier Vinylbilt is committed to a Zero Defect policy. Every person at each stage of the production process has the authority to reject a defective product. Vinylbilt has 75 individual work stations check the quality of everything, including label accuracy, paint, glass and any additional accessories. Products are packaged extremely well which ensures they are protected during shipping, before arriving at our warehouse. Jeff will call the customer to book the window installation date, usually a week or so ahead. Often leaving voice mail after voice mail as people are hard to get a hold of during business hours!! Crews pickup products to be installed that day from the warehouse, along with any needed materials which we supply such as caulking, casing trims, aluminum capping, etc. This ensures quality control. Over morning coffee Art reviews the daily jobs with the crews.

So much goes on behind the scenes. We know it’s hard to wait for your new products but patience will be rewarded with a project that goes smoothly and avoids many of the pitfalls that others suffer.
