Installation Day

Assuming that things have proceeded well up to this point you now arrive at maybe the most important step in the whole process, the installation. All else is meaningless if this step isn’t done well. Here are some things to look out for.

What can I do to prepare?

  • Anything that you can move out of the way of the openings to be worked on, furniture, drapes, beds etc, please do so but don’t kill yourself. If something is too big or difficult for you to move then the guys will usually take care of it.
  • Arrangements for removing or reinstalling blinds/shutters etc, should be made with the sales rep when placing the order.
  • Throw a pot of coffee on, always appreciated by our installers!

What you should expect

  • Most often Superior Home Improvements crews show up between 9-10am after loading the products at our warehouse. You can expect them to stay for however many days it takes to finish the job and not leave you half way through to go attend to another customer. They do sometimes like to go home at night though!
  • Drop sheets are used throughout the home as the installers must keep their shoes on for safety reasons. In some cases plastic sheeting will be used if the situation calls for it.
  • Checking the sizes of the window openings to be done and comparing to the sizes of the windows on the trucks, is one last major check that is performed before starting the install. This helps to make sure we don’t yank out one of your windows you weren’t expecting to change. Don’t laugh, we hear this happens to our competitors frequently.
  • The windows are usually done one at a time. That is to say that one installer may be working on one window, while the other goes ahead and starts to prepare the opening on the next window. We don’t rip out all the windows at once or leave customers with gaping holes over night.
  • A reputable company will go the extra mile for a customer and once we start working on the openings it isn’t unusual to come across things that weren’t visible beforehand. Areas without insulation, wood rot, water damage, loose structures, a whole host of problems which are almost always easily remedied, by a good installer who cares about the quality of his work. Our crews were trained by Art to “Do it Right, Do it Once”.
  • Once our guys are finished with the installation they will clean up the job site and remove all job related debris. Also at this point one of our installers will take the time to make sure the customer understands how to operate the products.
  • The balance owing is usually paid by cheque to the installers before they leave, once the job is completed.

 

What you should not expect;

  • You don’t want to make arrangements with work for some time off, or with family members to house sit and then have a crew not show up at all that day.
  • You don’t expect people to disrespect your home in any way, it should be treated by others as if it was their own. Unfortunately there are a lot of fly by night types in the home improvement industry. Deal with companies that have been around a long time and have good reputations.
  • Finding a mess once a company has finished a project in your home and left, doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that the job was done to the best of their ability does it? Leaving a home the way you found it, is not optional. It should be written on the contract that clean up and removal of all job related debris is included.
  • If the job wasn’t done right then you will find out in a variety of ways. Leaks, drafts, etc. One of the simplest things a customer can do after installation is check the operation of their products to make sure they work as they were intended. Something that isn’t aligned properly for example, will not open easily or smoothly.
  • You definitely don’t expect to get into arguments about things like the wrong product is installed or something is the wrong colour or not in the right place or doesn’t open on the right side or isn’t frosted, etc (we could list hundreds of things but you get the point). These types of situations happen with companies that don’t have a series of checks and balances in place at every step in the process.
  • Unexpected charges brought up after the work is finished isn’t acceptable.
