If the last time you had new windows installed was many years ago, the chances are good that there are now options available to you that didn’t previously exist. During consultations with new clients, we try to stress how important selecting new windows for a property is and also make them aware that there are numerous factors that need to be considered during the selection process. One aspect of a window replacement project that is particularly important is the type of glazing that the windows are fitted with. This will have a direct impact upon things like insulation (both heat and sound), protection from UV rays, energy bills and visibility. The main dilemma homeowners typically have is over whether they should invest in double or triple pane windows.
Two or Three: Which is Best for Your Window Replacement Project?
At its simplest, this is a choice between a window that has two panes and one that has three. But it’s the effects that this variable can have that make it a tough decision. We’re going to try and help you make that decision by taking a look at some of the pros and cons of each option.
Double Glazing
- Energy Savings – Double glazing has become the industry standard in Canada; due to the climate, single glazing simply isn’t an option. They do a very efficient job at insulating your property, boasting an R-value (insulation rating) somewhere between 3 and 4 usually. Studies have shown that they are up to 50 percent more effective at keeping heat energy in your home than single glazing.
- UV Ray Filtering – Double glazing will protect interior design elements inside your home, such as carpets, paintings and furniture, preventing these items from fading.
- High Visibility – An area in which double pane windows are superior to their triple paned counterparts; double pane windows typically let more light filter into your home’s interior, helping you save on artificial lighting (and electricity).
- More Affordable – The single biggest reason why homeowners often opt for double glazing. It’s typically 50 percent cheaper than the triple pane option and offers a good balance of performance vs. cost.
Triple Glazing
- Greater Energy Savings – That extra pane of glass makes all the difference and results in a 30 – 40 percent better performance level in terms of retaining heat energy. Expect a triple pane window replacement to come with an R-value of at least 9.
- Protects Your Skin – In addition to protecting your furniture from the sun, triple pane windows will also help to prevent harmful UV rays from burning your skin while indoors.
- Higher Price Point – To get access to those greater energy savings you’re going to have to pay a pretty penny. A triple pane window replacement will often cost double the price that double glazed windows do, which is a definite issue for many homeowners.
